Sialon is a silicon nitride based ceramic material with excellent thermal and mechanical properties for high performance industrial applications. What is Sialon?

Sialon is a high performance ceramic made from silicon (Si), aluminium (Al), oxygen (O) and nitrogen (N). We use aluminium atoms to partially replace silicon and nitrogen atoms to replace oxygen in the silicon nitride lattice. An alloyed structure promotes thermal stability, hardness and chemical inertness. With a Young’s modulus of 345 GPa and a hardness of over 17 GPa, our Sialon ceramics can withstand temperatures up to 1400°C. They are also wear resistant and have low coefficients of thermal expansion for harsh environments.

Manufacturing process of Sialon Ceramics and sintered silicon carbide.

Sialon Ceramics LTD adds sintered silicon carbide to our ceramic matrix backbone for improved mechanical and thermal properties.

For homogeneity, we carefully combine silicon carbide powder with other ceramic materials. Compacting this combination under high pressure creates a green body, the precursor to sintered silicon carbide. We use novel approaches, including cold isostatic pressing, to achieve uniform component density for precise sintering.

Importance of the sintering process in Sialon ceramics

Sintering transforms the green body into a fully densified ceramic. Sintering at around 1800°C in a controlled environment allows silicon atoms to diffuse into the ceramic lattice.

The process binds the silicon carbide particles and strengthens the grain boundaries and fracture toughness. We control the sintering time and temperature to achieve a fine-grained microstructure. This is necessary for the high wear resistance and thermal conductivity of sintered silicon carbide.
